I'm Not Worthy!

When it comes to graphic design, there is a lot of talk about which programs make someone worthy of a title. Specifically, there are individuals who believe that if you use Canva, you are not a graphic designer.

Before I ruffle feathers, I want to say that I use many different programs depending on the type of project. I use Canva like fast fashion when trying to gain a new client, I use Adobe when I have access to it (the monthly subscriptions are not cheap!), and I use GIMP or Inkscape when I have something more detailed for a client. On top of this, I use many other websites and programs for small details. While my personal favorite is Adobe, I know that not everyone has access to that from the start. I think whatever method you choose to use is one that works, and if you want to be a graphic designer, be one. Eventually, the products that have more capabilities will flow into what you need, but if all you ever need is Canva, great!I also want to add that if you are going to use Canva, knowing a few things is crucial!

  1. Know that often the fonts, images, and colors may not translate correctly, especially if you want to print items.

  2. You should learn what bleed, margins, and your colors (HEX or Pantone) are for printing purposes. (Rule of thumb is Pantone for Print, HEX for digital, but some printers may work differently).

  3. Understand that the designs you are using are often identifiable by others who use Canva.

I do have to ask if readers have any additional tips or moments of "PLEASE KNOW THIS!" for those who choose to use Canva. Or, if anyone has other programs for someone just starting off who may not be able to afford expensive subscriptions. Let me know in the comments!
